Instow has a long stretch of sandy beach, sand dunes and plenty of spots for children to go crabbing. www.instow.net

Westward Ho! offers 2 miles of golden sand backed by a pebble ridge. Look in the rock pools, build sand castles, fly kites or have a surfing lesson. www.westwardhodevon.com

Also nearby are the famous beaches of Saunton Sands, Croyde, Woolacombe and Bude. Tide times can be found at www.devon-tides.com and www.waiting-for-the-tide.com. These websites are easy to use and show the tide times for the next 30 days
